Backbeat Books www.backbeatbooks.com
A book that does what it says on the tin in that it recommends music, along with books and films, you may enjoy as a fan of Metallica. A book like this you’d think would be fairly obsolete in these internet days, especially with Amazon’s recommending system, but it is nice to browse through a printed book.
The chapters focus on classic bands, the NWOBHM bands, punk, hardcore, thrash and more. The potted biographies of each band or artist are well done but the tendency to end each on a pun can wear thin at times. Interesting box out where the author gives ten reasons why working with Lou Reed (including ostrich guitar tuning!) on the frankly dire album ‘Lulu’ was a good idea. Even after reading this I am not convinced!
Of course these selections are based on the author linking them to what Metallica have said has influenced them plus a few modern bands who take Metallica as a starting point in their sound. A chapter also deals with the offshoot bands and ones where various members of Metallica have guested on albums.
An interesting read and one I am sure the newer/younger fan of Metallica will enjoy as there is nothing better than discovering new bands and albums, which this nook will certainly help you do.
