Quick Plays: BITING ELBOWS, BEZOAR, HERMAN FRANK, SANGUINE

Robin George and Vix “You” (Angel Air)

Originally recorded and released in 1990, established guitarist Robin George is joined by Vix, who at the time had just disbanded the relatively successful Fuzzbox . “You” is very much a pop rock album and showcases a side to Vix that would be perfectly suited to the country music scene.

The album itself has, in places, clean pop with “You”, a slight blues feel in “Guilty”, some ‘60’s style tracks “Little Sister” and Take Away My Pain” and even a Spanish feeling acoustic side from “Seduction Song”. But it is tracks like “Rock and A Hard Place”, “World” and “I Want” that make “You” an interesting record, alongside the reworked Fuzzbox tracks “Your Loss My Gain” and the afore mentioned title track “You”.

This re-release also comes with an additional two bonus live tracks “Bluesong” and “Cry Wolf”.

BITING ELBOWS – S/T www.bitingelbows.com 2012

Russian band whose new album is their debut UK release. It is a nicely packaged CD complete with a three song DVD – they do like a violent video these guys! Musically they have a strong punk sound and attitude, especially lyrically and mix in some ska – single ‘Toothpick’ sounds like Hard-Fi. ‘World’s Most Important Something’ is a real riff-master and a good, solid punk tune. I am sure with airplay they could easily break the UK market as they sound like genuine punks, rather than the contrived US versions a la the Offspring.

BEZOAR ‘Wyt Deth’

Three piece sludge/psychedelic band from New York who will scare the living daylights out of listeners once the vocals of Sara Villard kick in. The album starts with some gentle acoustic guitar and then Sara’s vocals kick in. They have some real power and scream into your ears. The music is good, lots of stoner guitar riffs but for me the vocals are just too harsh. But if you like sludge metal loud and in your face you will love this and judging by the live reviews of the band they would be worth seeing.

HERMAN FRANK ‘Right In The Guts’ Metal Heaven 2012 www.hermanfrank.com

Accept guitarist Herman Frank is back with his second solo album and he has enlisted Rick Altzi (Thunderstone/At Vance) as the vocalist this time around. A very good move as he fits these metal stompers very well indeed – listen to ‘Roaring Thunder’ and ‘Vengeance’ and it is like Judas Priest meets Accept.

Altzi does his Coverdale impression on the album’s only slow number ‘Falling To Pieces’, a song that will have wider appeal to hard rock fans and more. As you’d expect Herman Frank’s guitar playing is top notch and his ably assisted by Mamalitsidis Cristos.

This is a no holds barred classic metal album and all the better for it. Even if like me you are not a fan of Accept this album will appeal to you. To be played loud and enjoyed by all.

Sanguine “Live” EP (www.sanguineband.com)

Available as a free download from the band’s website, this 5 track live EP was a bit of a surprise as I was not expecting the female vocals as opening track “Simplify” started, don’t get me wrong they are not out of place, I was just expecting some hairy assed bloke to come in growling, and instead the voice of Tarin Kerrey appeared.

It is that voice which makes Sanguine stand out and the band have already supported the likes of Megadeth, played at this year’s Download Festival and had Keerey appear on the debut album from Iron Maiden guitarist Adrian Smith’s new project Primal Rock Rebellion- I should also add that guitarist Nick Magee has also been writing with In Flames.

Apart from the first track, the tracks on the EP are previously unreleased- the others being “Bangkok Nights”, “Days Outnumbered”, “From Home” and “Paradise”.

Sanguine are clearly a band to keep an eye on.
