Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers – Live In Concert

Universal/Image 2012

Originally filmed and broadcast in 2003 as part of the SoundStage series, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers “Live In Concert” contains both episodes and boasts 22 tracks of hit songs, cover versions and rarely heard tracks.

Episode One opens with a rousing version of the much recorded classic “Baby, Please Don’t Go” and then goes into the simply awesome trio of “Crawling Back To You”, Travelling Wilburys’ “Handle With Care” and “I Won’t Back Down”- the Wilburys’ track in particular actually brought a lump to my throat with Scott Thurston taking the Roy Orbison vocal part perfectly and guitarist Mike Campbell faithfully recreating the solos.

By the time we get to “I’m Cryin’” I firmly believe there is no tighter band than The Heartbreakers out there, good examples of this being the vocal harmonies on the more laid back “Angel Dream”, the guitar solo on “Melinda” or the fact that “Refugee” sounds as fresh and vibrant as the day it was written.

Each one of the 22 tracks on this DVD is solid and well played, with a bluesy rendition of “Born In Chicago”, “Little Red Rooster” (complete with some very Keith Richards like guitars)and a nice touch of American courtesy of “Rollin’ In My Sweet Baby’s Arms” just some of the covers in the set.

With tracks such as “Love Is A Long Road”, “You Don’t Know How It Feels”, “You Wreck Me” and “Thirteen Days” rounding off the highlights here, this is a DVD that will surely be in demand amongst fans of the band.
