JEFFERSON STARSHIP – Freedom At Point Zero

Formed from the ashes of West Coast band Jefferson Airplane in the early 70s, Jefferson Starship (later just Starship) kept that influence in their brand of hard rock and power pop. This album, originally released, saw a more AOR direction. Think about the emerging Toto of the era, and to a much lesser extent Boston. With Mickey Thomas replacing the briefly departing Grace Slick (they would later become co-vocalists), opener Jane (also a hit single) epitomises this new direction, powerful vocals, keyboards that hint of Journey or Chicago, and some tidy guitar work make for a good start. Twin guitars with keyboards – it’s a full sounds that mixes a nice crunch with some glassy vocal harmonies, it’s a good start.
The 8 minute Awakening mixes hard edged passages with quieter passages, a good melody, and an even better guitar solo. A progressive west coast influence there. Girl With The Hungry Eyes then hints to the power pop the band would turn to in the 80s.
Not quite directionless but definitely a time of flux for the band. That said, still a great album that’s solid and polished. Def well worth checking out.
