UDR/EMI – Release Date 24/9/2012
The world of Rock is full of passion and vice and has claimed a significant number of victims over the years – people whose resistance and ability to manage drugs and alcohol is incomparable to and much less documented than those of Motorhead’s frontman Ian Fraser “Lemmy” Kilmister who still goes out and about things with the energy of a person half his age.
Motorhead have released many killer studio albums over the years but they have always been, first and foremost, a live band and, as this new live CD/DVD release entitled “The World Is Ours Vol.2 suggests, they continue to be a force to be reckoned with!
“The World Is Ours Vol.2” follows in the steps of last year’s similarly-named live release and its main audio/video feature is the band’s performance at Wacken Open Air on the 6th of August 2011. As Motorhead live shows go, this is among their finest documented and this is not only to do with the individual performances and the crowd’s brilliant interaction but also as a result of the great and truly professional video coverage provided by what is considered by many to be the best Metal festival in the world!
Consisting of classics and newbies in equal measure and obviously compiled with certain dynamics in mind, the show’s set list and interpretations of the material on offer will undoubtedly please both old and new fans alike. Old-school belters such as “Iron Fist” and “Over The Top” operate quite healthily next to more contemporary mid-tempo/rhythmical material like “Get Back In Line” and “In The Name Of Tragedy”, the latter incorporating a powerful drum solo by skinsman-extraordinaire Mikey Dee!
Lemmy is in high spirits, constantly interacting with the crowd and keen to remind them that Motorhead is not a Metal but a Rock n’Roll band. “The Chase Is Better Than The Catch”, “Killed By Death” and “Ace Of Spades” are given the royal treatment while the highlights of the show will have to be the politically-incorrect “Just ‘Cos You Got The Power”, “Bomber” and the killer rendition of “Overkill” which, in typical Motorhead fashion, closed the band’s set.
While the audio version of the release contains the Wacken show split over two discs, the audio version has many more things to offer, starting with a six track performance at the 2011 Sonisphere Festival – a festival which took place a day following the death of the band’s ex guitarist Michael “Wurzel” Burston and which was, as a result, dedicated to him.
Furthermore, there is another professionally-filmed set of songs covering the band’s 2011 performance at the Rock In Rio festival as well as a short documentary presented by two of the band’s oldest and most loyal fans, entitled “Festival Impressions W:O:A” which I am sure that most of you will find fairly…entertaining!
Live albums are very specific releases in the sense that they are normally only really attractive to the loyal fan base of the band in question and, but I cannot place “The World Is Ours Vol.2” in this category. What this very rich contents-wise release did was to re-ignite my interest in a band that I have always respected and enjoyed listening to but not passionately supported in the past – the best result that any label in the world could hope for such a release!
There is a good reason why Motorhead are considered to be living legends – all you need to do is choose any of the many formats (CD/DVD/LP/Blue Ray) that this release is presented in and you will undoubtedly find out for yourself why this is the case.
