Singles Bar: RED MEASURE, VALERIE JUNE, THE CIVIL WARS

RED MEASURE – No-One’s Face (EP) Touch Act Records (Released Dec 10th)

Three piece band from Nashville and they have released one previous EP to date. I have listened to this a fair few times and I have to say it washes over you. Nothing really stands out and it is very average indie music, although I am sure the NME will be loving it. Try by all means on their website but there is nothing here I am afraid for me.

VALERIE JUNE – Workin’ Woman Blues (Released Nov 19th)

Debut single from Valerie June a US singer who recorded this in the Black Keys recording studio and Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys helped produce the single and album. She has a nice country twang backed by a little blues and soul. Hard to judge an artist on one song but based on this her debut album due early next year will be worth a listen.

THE CIVIL WAR – Poison & Wine (EP) Sony Music (Released 18th Nov)

An American duo consisting of Joy Williams and John Paul White whose debut album has sold half-a-million copies in the US and earned a silver disc here in the UK. This EP is released as they tour the UK and features ‘Poison & Wine’ – a lovely duet that allows their vocals centre stage backed by minimal instrumentation. The other three songs on here are all covers. First up is ‘Talking In Your Sleep’ by the Romantics, again a simple backing allowing their two voices to take centre stage. The Elliott Smith cover ‘Between The Bars’ is okay and ‘Disarm’, originally by the Smashing Pumpkins is the pick of the three. A fantastic version and again the listener is drawn to the vocal performances. Highly recommended.
