FLASH BASTARD – Rock n’ Roll Must Be Destroyed

 Cargo

Having been signed to Nikki Sixx’s Americoma label in the mid-‘90’s, Canadian band Flash Bastard were dropped before their debut album was released- mainly down to the fact that vocalist Donal Finn had an altercation with The Scorpions when opening for the  band on their 1999 tour. Fast forward to 2012 however and the band have re-recorded said debut for its long delayed release.

A mix of ‘70’s glam, ‘80’s sleaze and a dose of Rocky Horror, it is the album’s harder edged tracks such as “Detroit” and “Frozen” that will win listeners over. The drums and backing vocals on opening and title track “Rock n’ Roll Must Be Destroyed” are the strongest link to the ‘70’s and this is seen again on “C’Mon” and “Baby’s A Bore”.  “Teenage War” is reminiscent of early Motley Crue- think “Toast Of The Town” era, whilst “Slut” is a track that bridges ‘70’s and ‘80’s glam, even with its Spinal Tap like bass line.

There are a couple of Hanoi Rocks style moments in “Junksick Blues”, “Psycho” and “Don’t Think About It”- the latter also has some Tyla style vocals. “Printed and Cuffed” has a slight Faster Pussycat feel to it and the highlights are rounded off by “I Shot The World”.

“Rock n’ Roll Must Be Destroyed” is a good record and well worth the wait. I wonder what the Bastard’s will do next…….
