Zorx Intergalactic Music (Release date – out now)
Every so often an album comes along that treads a very thin line between genius and ‘what the f**k!’, this album is definitely one of those. This is the third album by Captain Zorx who formed from the ashes of an underground Ska outfit back in 2000. The band claim they are ‘disco metal from outer space’ and this album is a story of everyday space people and a battle between the hero Captain Zorx and the evil villain Baron Luitpold Van Lendenruh.
The first track opens with yodelling, yes you read that correctly, yodelling and then continues on to introduce the main characters who each have a ‘distinctive’ voice. Apart from the hero and the villain we are also introduced to the likes of Greg The Robot, Zelda, the love interest and MOPS, a two headed dog.
The ‘disco metal’ description isn’t too far from the mark but things can change several times during the course of one song, you soon get the feeling that the band are trying a little too hard to prove how ‘zany’ they are. There is no faulting the playing though and the guys manage to carry off the complex and sudden changes in direction with apparent ease.
For me though the joke wore thin fairly quickly and with so many different musical styles and characters fitted into each song the album becomes disjointed. They claim Zappa as one of their influences which I can see, but Frank wrote cohesive pieces no matter how crazed they were. Captain Zorx need to learn that sometimes less is more, then perhaps they may be considered as genius.
