Album review: ANNIE KEATING – For Keeps
While Bob Harris listeners may be acquainted with the name, New York based Americana singer songwriter Annie Keating will be unfamiliar to most. But her self-released fifth album, For Keeps, should go some way to redressing that balance.
For the most part, the album sits firmly in Shelby Lynne / Shawn Colvin territory and more than holds its own in that regard. But it’s when Keating takes an unexpected side road that things really get interesting and ‘For Keeps’ really shows its spurs.
The opener, ‘Storm Warning’, a southern swamp boogie that ZZ Top would be proud of, featuring Tony Joe White style guitar/harmonica that underpin Keating’s earthy vocals is a marvellous highlight. ‘Let It Come’ somehow manages to combine elements of Madonna’s Vogue and Isacc Hayes’ Shaft, while the album closer is a heart melting cover of Neil Young’s ‘Cowgirl In the Sand ‘.
Beautifully crafted songs with sultry vocals abound and it looks like Annie Keating’s reputation could be on the rise. ***1/2
