Album review: SOUND OF CONTACT – Dimensionaut

Sound Of Contact - Dimensionaut

Inside Out www.insideout.de

A new band on the block, although they have generated extra interest for the vocalist and drummer in the band is Simon Collins, son of Phil, which instantly puts pressure and expectations on the band. Good on them then for meeting these and then some.

Simon is joined by Dave Kerzner (keyboards/vocals), Kelly Nordstrom (guitar/bass) and Matt Dorsey (guitar/bass/vocals) and between them they provide a melodic prog/metal album.

The two short instrumentals, ‘Sound Of Contact’ and ‘Realm of In-Organic Beings’ (I thought I was listening to Mastodon when I first heard this) are superb, having both heavy and mellower parts in such a short time frame. Hannah Stobart guests on ‘Beyond Illumination’ and she complements Simon’s vocals very well.

‘Closer To You’ is simply divine and shows what a melodious voice Simon Collins has. This song reminded me of bands like Enchant and Marillion (in their EMI/Hogarth years).

The band’s real progressive roots shine through on the nineteen minute epic ‘Möbius Slip’,  a song which will I am sure convince any doubters that this band is merely riding on the back of having a son of a famous rock musician in the band.

Lots of musical ideas on this album, leaving Sound Of Contact plenty of scope to explore these on subsequent album and heavier in parts than you’d maybe expect.  ****
