True North Records [Release date 01.07.13]
Released on both DVD and CD formats, Come As You Are Live captures Madison Violet – Canadian country / folk due Brenley MacEachern and Lisa MacIsaac – at a sold out date in Koln, Germany as part of their 2011 European tour.
Accompanied by Aidrian Lawryshyn on double bass, it’s a stripped back set that sees Lisa playing acoustic guitar, violin and mandolin, and Brenley acoustic guitar, tenor guitar, dobro and harmonica. The playing throughout is exemplary, as is the girls wonderful individual and harmony vocals that are a trademark of their sound.
As Americana country/folk inspired sets go, it’s something of a master class that takes the listener on a bittersweet and laid back ride punctuated with sumptuous vocals and subtle playing. The audience appreciation is palpable, but I can’t help but feel that the 17 tracks played over the hour long performance would be enhanced by the dvd visuals.
And even though it’s been clearly recorded on a budget, that doesn’t detract from a marvellous performance that puts Madison Violet squarely at the top of the tree in comparison to similar acts such as Larkin Poe. October 2013 will see the girls arrive on these shores for a set of 10 dates and on the strength of Come As You Are you’d be strongly advised to catch one. ***1/2
