Album review: DENNERS TRICKBAG – Denners Trickbag

Target Records ( Release date – 9th Sept 2013)
Michael Denner has produced some fine performances over the years both as a member of Mercyful Fate and in King Diamond’s band, his guitar work on the ‘Abigail’ album being a personal highlight. In recent years though, apart from the odd guest appearance here and there, Michael has kept a low profile.
He plans to bounce back however with this release under the name of Denners Trickbag. For this project he has gathered together a band with years of experience between them, seasoned session players and friends, to help bring his vision together. The album however is a bit of a hit and miss affair.
First up on the album is ‘Ethiopia’ which starts with a lengthy, repetitive instrumental section which eventually leads into vocals provided by Lars Berthelsen. The song is an underwhelming start to the album and things don’t fare much better over the next two tracks either, both are discordant and a hard listen, not too much fun so far then.
Things do improve the longer you listen with tracks like ‘Polecat Women’ and a cover of the Montrose classic ‘I Got The Fire’ showing some real promise, more tracks of this calibre and we may have been on to a winner. Too many of the tracks though are bog standard pub rock and instantly forgettable, not what I expected from a guitarist with such a rich pedigree.
I really can’t see this album finding a huge audience and anyone who is attracted by the Denner name and his past works I feel will be disappointed. You can’t help but think this could have been so much better.
