Gig review: STEELHOUSE FESTIVAL – Ebbw Vale, 27 July 2013

Steelhouse Festival, 27 July 2013

High up in the hills, at Hafod-Y-Dafal farm in South Wales, the third annual Steelhouse Festival is now an established Rock and Metal weekender. Tickets were modestly priced at £65 all weekend or £40 a day, including adult and family campsites. Also campers and party goers could arrive early on the Friday, before the festival started. This year they had an illustrious line up on both days.

Anvil, Steelhouse Festival, 27 July 2013

Anvil performed their more familiar, and new material, and with a sense of fun. The rare  rainfall (with the UK experiencing extended hot weather) didn’t seem to bother any of the revellers and no doubt reminded some of festivals past, like Monsters Of Rock.

British AOR legends FM continue to enjoy rejuvenated success and exhibit a certain grace and self assurance.  Their catalogue of hits was perfectly in sync with the warm weather even given the rain.

FM, Steelhouse Festival, 27 July 2013

Seeking some sanctuary backstage,  Jay and Matt from Tigertailz informed me of their up and coming EP release whilst Nev Macdonald frontman from Skin was reunited with his writing partner Neil Garland from their days of the mighty Kooga. As Hand Of Dimes they had played earlier in the day and also with a new EP.

Saxon, Steelhouse Festival, 27 July 2013

Saxon exploded on stage literally, with fire whooshing out in front of them. A magnificent stage show and truly a great band, sealed in the history of metal from day one.

Performing a legion of hits including ‘Power and the Glory’, ‘The Eagle Has Landed’ and many more. Until a curtain drop, to be raised again to reveal a massive Eagle – the first time in twenty years that they’ve used it on stage.

Saxon, Steelhouse Festival, 27 July 2013

Not letting up they continued with ‘Strong Arm Of The Law’ and ‘Wheels Of Steel’ whilst an encore of  ‘Crusader’, ‘Denim & Leather’ and finally ‘Princess Of The Night’ left a very satisfied South Wales crowd.

This festival was great value for money and a brilliant hard rock and metal weekend.
