Album review: HURLEMENT – Terreur Et Tourment

Emanes Metal Records (Release date – out now)
You may have guessed by the title that Hurlement are a French metal outfit. The band have been together for ten years and are proud to fly the flag for true metal. There are no airs or graces here, this is full-on, head down heavy metal played at breakneck speed.
Surprisingly this is only the band’s second album but they have toured extensively across Europe and played a number of festivals. The band mix tracks sung in English and French throughout the album, but all are treated to the same rapid fire treatment. Frontman, Alexis the Warnabot, has a distinctive voice not too far removed from Udo Dirkschneider. At some points he hits notes that only dogs can hear but his histrionic delivery suits the music.
The album features tales of the inquisition, witch hunts and persecution and the cover also takes the theme showing a scene of the inquisition in all its gory glory. Whilst perhaps not the most original band or album to emerge in the last few years it does deliver what it promises, heavy metal in its purest form. Whether that is enough to take the band any further remains to be seen.
