Wienerworld [Release date 24.09.13]

New to DVD is The Quireboys October 1992 show from London’s Town & Country Club – or for those of you under, let’s say 30, The Forum. The band were touring in support of their recently release sophomore album “Bitter Sweet & Twisted” and, featuring virtually the band’s best known line-up, the set-list is made up of seven new tracks and six from the highly successful debut album “A Bit of What You Fancy”.

The show itself was filmed for TV and as such is good quality, the only downside to this is that during “I Don’t Love You Anymore”, ultimately the big song in the set, you get the credits running and final track “Long time Comin’” is cut short.

That said, what a cracking show this is- with songs like “Tramps and Thieves”, “Don’t Bite The Hand” and the often overlooked ballad “King of New York”- I am ashamed to say that on the night of the show I used this “break” to have a pee and a pint, now almost two decades on I kinda regret that- the band are extremely tight and in stunning form.

Spike’s vocals have the ability to switch between rock and raw emotion in the blink of an eye and that has always been a selling point for the band, who on tracks like “Misled” and “Roses and Rings” sound like The Faces at their best.

The big hitting trio of “Hey You”, “7 O’Clock” and “I Don’t Love You Anymore” show you just how good, and popular the band were at the time, but the real stand out track here is a cover of Hot Chocolate’s “Brother Louie” complete with Stones like guitar from Guy’s Bailey and Griffin (incidentally the single of this was the band’s last appearance in the UK Top 40).

So back to 2013 and we find The Quireboys still touring, still releasing great albums, albeit with only Spike and Guy Griffin remaining from the line-up on “Live at the Town & Country Club”, and still selling out shows wherever they appear. For fans of The Quireboys this “Live at the Town & Country Club” DVD will be essential.  ****
