There was a buzz of excitement and expectation coming into tonight’s gig for a few reasons, The Temperance Movement are riding on a high after release of their same titled debut album, The Graveltones have just launched their debut album ‘Don’t Wait Down’ but the main reason is we get to see both bands on the same stage and as the current tour ends soon we wonder if we ever see these bands on the same stage again. Both bands have their own distinctive styles but what underlies this is pure real music filled with so much passion and energy that’s makes it infectious to all that listen to it.
The venue is ideal for this evening’s show and fills up early giving first up Samuel Taylor a great audience to entertain. I have seen Samuel on a previous TTM tour and he is a great solo singer songwriter who yet again produces an entertaining set. There is talk that he will join TTM on the rest of the European tour and in my mind he will be a great addition to the dates.
Next up is The Graveltones, now I have seen these guys before but for the GT virgins in the audience they were about to get their senses severely altered by the sound that these guys produce.
This is raw music at its best with the maniacal vocals and raw guitars from Jimmy O to the powerful frenzied drumming from ‘Mikey Sorbello’ you wonder where it all comes from and where it is going next.
They are definitely relishing the chance to play tracks of their new album which is due for imminent release and can quite easily be your next favourite band. Straight off they hit us with ‘Bang Bang’ and ‘St Lucia’ from the new album and the set concluded with a favorite of mine ‘Sullen Blue’ and a rendition if John Lee Hooker’s ‘Boom Boom’. Yet another amazing set leaves us all wanting more.
Setlist: Bang Bang, St Lucia, Right Off The Shelf, You’re No Good, Money, Catch Me On The Fly, Sullen Blue, Boom Boom.
Headliners for tonight are The Temperance Movement, having seen these guys play a number of times this year and been following them since last year I have seen crowds swell to a point that shows sell out well before the show date.
They really are riding the wave at present with back to back touring giving them huge exposure and a lot of airplay following the release of ‘The Temperance Movement’ album and its shows that good honest music and hard work pays dividends rather than the flybynight download pop culture.
Tonight’s set kicks off with the new single ‘Midnight Black’, ‘Be Lucky’ and ‘Midnight Riders’ followed by the delightful bluesy & soulful ‘Smouldering’ showing that they can kick it up when needed and slow it down to produce some amazing music.
‘Chinese Lanterns’ is always a special time in the night and the band go unplugged and audience goes silent. The passion and feeling that Phil Campbell gets in his voice is backed perfectly by the musicianship of the rest of the band and the new album and tour shows that they can do the slow bluesy and up tempo tracks with easy and passion.
Setlist: Midnight Black, Be Lucky, Morning Riders, Smouldering, Know For Sure, Chinese Lanterns, Lovers And Fighters, Only Friend, Pride, Ain’t No Telling
Encore: Take It Back, Serenity.
