Album review: WICKED FAITH – Under No Illusion

Wicked Faith - Under No Illusion

Self-released [Release date 18.11.13]

It’s always good to hear a young band giving it their all but referencing  – perhaps subconsciously – some of those female-fronted bands that you grew up with.  Wicked Faith formed in Norwich in late-2011 and have already released a 4 track EP and supported Reckless Love in 2013.

Their brand of ballsy hard rock is built around the excellent vocals of Jade Murray and the guitar pyrotechniques of Tom Jordan, whilst Becki Webster lays down a gum-vibrating bass line and with Matt Dove on drums.  It makes me sound very old but the relentless riffery has all the weight of prime-time Budgie.

Jade’s vocal approach may be cast in the Joan Jett mould but at times she has the power of a mid-eighties Moyet and even Heart’s Ann Wilson in places.  On tracks like ‘Truth Or Dare’ she also affects a Robin Beck-like AOR sheen.

In short, this is a damn fine, well produced, debut and listeners will warm to the riffage as much as those vocals.  Tracks like ‘What You Call A Heart’ and ‘You Know Best’ all have a great sense of urgency and if there’s one minor criticism it’s the lack of real variation in pace and a slow-burner which I am sure Jade and the band would do very well.   ****
