If the quality of tonight’s bands is anything to go by then the future of Rock music is in good hands as both The Treatment and Cage The Gods are both young in age and full of the attitude and tenacity needed to get out there and play great rock music that goes back to the days when rock bands were just that: hard rocking and no frills.
The Treatment who are touring the imminent release of their second album ‘Running With The Dogs’ and Cage The Gods who are due to release their debut album ‘Badlands’ in the next few months have both received great reviews and acclaims from the music industry so far.
The venue tonight is the Sugarmill in Stoke on Trent, now in its 20th year has hosted some great bands over the years and continues to be one of the North West’s premier venues. They also promote local and upcoming bands giving them exposure and experience to widening audiences.
Tonight we have two local bands Dead City Souls and Obey, both from the Stoke area and both well supported in the crowd. Dead City Souls are a 5 piece who only formed in 2013 and have a few good gigs under their belts. I only caught a couple of their tracks and liked what I heard; I’ve seen a few of the guys in other bands around the area so will try to see them again to get a good review of them.
Obey have a heavier rock/metal sound and as with all 3 piece bands are very tight, they blend the darkness of Sabbath with the energy and power of Pantera to produce a powerhouse of metal that gets your ears twitching and your head banging. Great sound and one I’m going to look out for again. ‘Doom Laden’ there new album is out now, I foresee another purchase on it way.
Now on to the main bands of the night, Cage The Gods really show that hard work/talent and great songs get you noticed, they spent the time perfecting there style and recording all there material before looking round for management/labels so they could be sure they would be putting out material they wanted to and were happy with.
They have had numerous nominations for best new band etc and have also being praised by some highly respected DJ’s and radio stations so this approach has certainly worked for
them.
This 4 piece band have a hard hitting rock sound, full of great riffs from Jam (guitars) and Peter (guitar, vocals) and a solid backline of Mitch (bass) and the Colin (drums) who during the set spent a fair amount of time on his feet behind the kit beckoning the crowd.
They hit the set straight away with the title track of the new album ‘Badlands’, full of riffs, searing vocals and gutsy bassline’s these boys are on fire and rip through the set which comprises mostly the new album including one of my faves ‘Sacrifice’, finishing off their shortened set tonight with ‘Promises’.
They have no doubt gained a lot more fans from tonight and also the tour as a whole, one of my bands to look out for in the 2014 GRTR! Reviewers Selection.
The Treatment, headliners for the night, come out of the same mould that all the great British rock bands did from the past and like CTG’s are bringing quality classic rock music that we all grew up with to a whole host of new listeners.
Cambridge-based they formed back in 2008 when founder member Dhani (drums) looked round for musicians to take his vision of the band forward. In came Matt (vocals), Ben (lead guitar), Tagore (rhythm guitar) and Rick aka swoogle (bass) and they were off.
If you mix Kiss, AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Guns ‘N Roses and Sex Pistols you get close to their style, rock-punk-attitude-riffs all rolled into a huge energetic set. Kicking off with a song that really sums them up ‘I Bleed Rock n Roll’ these guys are every part the rock band, throwing the poses and engaging the crowd.
‘Drink F. Fight’, ‘Don’t Look Down’ and ‘Party’ keep the tempo up and rocking and apart from a few slower tracks the pace is kept up giving maximum riffage for us all to enjoy. A blistering set to end an awesome night of music.
