Album review: DIESEL – Into The Fire
Escape Music [Release date 23.05.14] www.escape-music.com
This is an interesting one, as it sees the return of Robert Hart, formerly of Bad Company, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band and the excellent Distance album working with FM’s guitarist Jim Kirkpatrick.
Drummer Jimmy Copley (MMEB/Paul Rodgers) and bass player Pat Davey complete the band’s line-up. They also have FM’s Steve Overland adding his distinctive backing vocals and Adam Wakeman on keyboards.
Loving the title track which sounds like a UK version of Night Ranger, as Jim Kirkpatrick is playing some Brad Gillis approved riffs and solos. ‘Fortune Favours The Brave’ sounds like a Hart-era Bad Company rocker meets FM (the latter due to FM’s Steve Overland helping out on backing vocals).
For a little variety ‘Coming Home’ adds some horns, although it’s the rockers like ‘Bitter & Twisted’ when the band really comes into their own. The guitars and Hart’s vocals work a treat and the little keyboard flourishes of Adam Wakeman round things off nicely.
The blues hard rock influence is strong on here and you can’t help but stomp your feet to ‘Let’s Take The Long Way Home’. ‘Skin & Bone’ is another fine hard rock tune and overall the album is a veriatble feast of uptempo hard rock with no real ballad in sight.
If you liked FM’s ‘Rockville’ and the Bad Company eras of Brian Howe and Robert Hart this album will be right up your street. I’d be very surprised if this album didn’t make some year end ‘ best of’ lists. Highly recommended and here’s hoping for some live shows and definitely another album! ****1/2
