Universal [Out now]
The good news is that “Starflight United” is the newly released 5th album form Sweden’s funk rock friendly Electric Boys. The bad news is that it is currently only being released in Sweden and Finland (fear not though, a full release has been promised).
This is the second album the band has released since reforming in 2009 (the first being 2011’s “And Them Boys Done Swang”). Hard rock, funk laden, glam metal- call it what you want, this is the sound of the Electric Boys at their best- complete with the big choruses, clever lyrics and addictively danceable songs, as you would expect.
Opening track “Spaced Out” kicks off proceedings nicely ( and includes the lyric “I’m an astronaut and I can’t get caught”) and within the albums 12 tracks we get the likes of the funk loaded “Lucy Fur”, big love song “Ain’t No Getting Over You” and the slow, dark, brooding and soundtrack like instrumental “59 High Mountain Street”.
Title track “Starflight United” gently floats along Beatles style, whilst “If Only She Was Lonely”, “Gangin’ Up” and “Tramp” are all retro tinged classic Electric Boys. It is “Desire”, “Life Is So Electric” and “BASF” that are the albums ultimate highlights though.
“Starflight United” is a great Electric Boys album and stands shoulder to shoulder with each of its predecessors. The band is playing in the UK in September and I’ve no doubt that the set list will include a number of the above songs. *****
