If you didn’t know the story you may be surprised that less than three months after this recording the Mark III version of Purple split, Blackmore continuing with Rainbow and Coverdale eventually forming Whitesnake.  From the opener ‘Burn’ here is a band on a mission, this is a tremendous version of the song and no doubt energised further by the new remastering.  In a sense this gig is a great swansong and now, carefully remastered, it appears complete for the first time.

Featuring tracks from ‘Burn’ and  ‘Stormbringer’ but peppered with “that” song and a couple more band classics – including the 20-minute, rambling, ‘Space Truckin’ -  it’s a great snapshot of this band’s dying days.  Glenn Hughes input may have divided some (and still does) but he is perhaps less intrusive here (compared to the later Paris gig) and works well in partnership with Coverdale.

For a long time the remastered ‘Live In Paris 75′ (2001) has been the definitive account of this period and the ‘MK III The Final Concerts’ (1996) included all but two tracks here (‘The Gypsy’ and ‘Lady Double Dealer’) whilst ‘You Fool No One’ is restored with its drum solo intact.  It also retains Blackmore referencing two songs that appeared on the Rainbow debut.

That still leaves another Purple Person’s holy grail – the complete Saarbrucken gig that formed the basis of the ‘Made In Europe’ set (1976) – for another day’s remixing.  ****
