Quick plays: JOHN FORRESTER, FYRE!

John Forrester

JOHN FORRESTER – Outsider

Irregular Records www.forrester.uk.com [Released 27.10.14]

This is the third solo album from John Forrester who plays bass in the Outcast band and bass/double-bass with Robb Johnson. On this album John Forrester provides the vocals, bass and acoustic/classical guitars with a few guest musicians including guitarist Andy Webb and drummer Pete Bloomfield.

A good mix of songs and tempos, from the Levellers like title track through to the more reflective ‘The Wrong Side Of The River’, which brings to mind Robb Johnson. What I like about this album is the stories within the songs, be it a paean to Edinburgh’s ‘Princes Street’ or ‘Lily’s Bones’. The music is well thought out to, nothing dominates and the guitar playing throughout is simply marvelous. ***1/2

FYRE! – Missy Powerful

Soul Food/AFM Records www.fyreofficial.com [Released 27.10.14]

Fyre! are centred around Argentinian singer/guitarist Alejandra Burgos who together with Lars Ratz (bass) and Tolo Grimalt (guitars), formed Fyre! back in 2011.

The songs aren’t too bad at all, nothing to taxing and many in the pop rock vein of artists like Kelly Clarkson and Avril Lavinge. ‘We Are Here’, ‘I Like To Rock’ (some top notch guitar solos on this song) and the single ‘Stay Until The Moonshine’ are made for singing along in the live arena, whilst the musical menace on ’27′ shows a different side to her vocals and music.

They support Anastacia on her European tour and with these pop rock tunes are likely to appeal to her audience and pick up a few new fans in the process. ***1/2
