DVD review: SEPULTURA AND LES TAMBOURS DU BRONX – Metal Veins Alive At Rock In Rio

SEPULTURA AND LES TAMBOURS DU BRONX – Metal Veins Alive At Rock In Rio

Eagle Vision [Release date 15.09.14] CD & DVD

Sepultura have always been known for their mix of heavy riffs with tribal rhythms and this DVD captures the ultimate incarnation of this. The band were joined on stage at the massive Rock In Rio festival in September 2013 by the French industrial rhythm troop Les Tambours Du Bronx who knock the living daylights out of oil drums creating a huge wall of sound which perfectly compliments Sepultura’s music.

The DVD starts off in dramatic style with Les Tambours Du Bronx lined across centre stage drumming along to the instrumental track ‘Kaiowas’ with some great shots of the effort involved in creating their heavy, rhythmic sound. They are then joined by Sepultura for a blistering ‘Spectrum’ with the huge crowd churning like a stormy sea.

The set is a mix of Sepultura classics, a few of Les Tambours Du Bronx numbers and a great cover of The Prodigy’s ‘Firestarter’. One of my favourite Sep tracks, ‘Refuse/ Resist’, proves to be a highlight with the perfect blend of melody, aggression and powerful drumming, you can see the energy on stage which in turn feeds to the audience, total carnage is an apt description.

Sepultura don’t have it all their own way though as Les Tambours Du Bronx bring a few good songs to the party as well with four tracks in the set, the best being ‘Fever’ which steamrollers the crowd into submission.

Over the course of the 13 tracks the DVD footage immerses you in a performance which has to rank amongst one of the most energetic and powerful live performances I have witnessed. The final track, ‘Roots Bloody Roots’, is the perfect set closer again with the two groups in perfect rhythmic harmony, stunning stuff.

This set is also available on CD which gives you a good audio record of the night but for me DVD is the more impressive as you can see the effort and power that all players put into the set. The DVD also contains a documentary on the collaboration and the gig build up which adds to the package.

It may not be the longest concert DVD ever but it does pack a punch and as a visual record of this memorable show it does the job nicely.  ****
