Gentle Art Of Music [Released 16.02.15]

This is the band’s ninth studio album and their first in three years. It is a concept album based on the human quest for what is home.

Those new to Slyvan’s sound they go for the epic soundscapes, often led by the wonderful keyboards playing of Volker Söhl. If there is one downside to the music is that is does sound cinematic at times and the listener can see their attention flagging. That said the beautiful ‘Black And White’ is certainly worth your time, with vocalist Marco Glühmann and the music recalling latter day Marillion.

They can rock out a little as can be heard on ‘The Sound Of Her World’ which features heavy guitar backed by keys and a choral vocal arrangement.

Interesting musically, although not a must have like the recent Lonely Robot and Neal Morse Band albums.  ***1/2

ROB MORATTI – Tribute To Journey

Escape Music www.escape-music.com [Released 20.03.15]

Rob Moratti made this album as a tribute to the main influence on his music, namely Journey and their vocalist on the classic albums Steve Perry. He was a member of Final Frontier whose albums were very enjoyable and Journey like.

Here he does twelve Journey classics, most at the rocky end of the band’s catalogue like ‘Stone In Love’ and ‘Be Good To Yourself’. The problem is a lot of his vocals sound autotuned and the credits say ‘Midi sampling’. He has a great vocal, easily able to hit those Steve Perry high notes so I think the vocals maybe genuine.

It is a limited release to 1,000 copies which is fair as it is not going to be of much interest to fans of Rob Moratti and hardcore Journey fans/collectors. Great songs and sung by a talented vocalist and fan of the band, good to blast out now and then. ***1/2

KYSHERA – CiRCLE

This is the band’s third album and they have a loyal fanbase, heck they even have their own word to describe their sound ‘konic’, which they define as ‘anything that is otherwise indefinable’.

The opening track ‘Napoleon’ is a potpourri of musical styles from the metal riffs through to a reggae break midway through the song and a crazy Muse-approved synth solo. The vocals of James Kennedy really drive the song along nicely, he switches from melodic vocals through to screaming with ease.

‘Inertia’ is another song utilizing various vocal styles and they have a mellower side to on the poignant album closer ‘The End’. The varied and experimental nature of their music reminds me of Faith No More at times, along with Avenged Sevenfold on the intense riffing parts. Overall though they do have their own sound and good to see a band who are not imitating the latest musical fad.

Well worth a listen for those after a little more challenge and variety to their music. ***1/2
