Quick plays: C.O.P., MARTINA EDOFF, TAD MOROSE

C.O.P – State Of Rock
AOR Heaven [Release date 25.09.15]

C.O.P. are a new band featuring Grand Illusion’s vocalist Peter Sundell, who is joined by Ola af Trampe (guitar/bass) and his younger brother Christian (keys/drums). Take the first letter of each band member’s first name and you get COP!

Now I am a big fan of Grand Illusion (you can’t go wrong with a band named after a classic Styx album!) and their OTT vocals/pomptastic music, and with all three band members in C.O.P. having been involved in that band expectations were high. Sadly they don’t quite hit those heights, although ‘Nightmare’ is great fun but the high vocals of Peter are an acquired taste. It is just a little to AOR by numbers for me and the band face a lot of competition in a crowded marketplace.

Do have a listen to ‘Nightmare’ and the heartfelt ‘Without You’. Personally I’d be happier with a full on Grand Illusion album next time. ***

MARTINA EDOFF - Unity

MARTINA EDOFF – Unity
Into Records [Release date 16.10.15] www.intorecords.com

I reviewed Martina Edoff’s debut album around this time last year and enjoyed it, drawing comparisons to Heart and Cher on the the vocals. This second album she has moved up a level, signing to a new record label Into Records and having H.E.A.T.’s Jona Tee help on production, co-writing and tinkling the ivories on the record. In fact he roped in all of his band mates in H.E.A.T. bar the vocalist to provide the music.

It is not unlike a female fronted H.E.A.T. at times like on the excellent ‘Never Let You Down’, with a massive hook filled chorus and a radio hit if ever there was one. The title track fair bounces along like a typical H.E.A.T. song.

It’s not all H.E.A.T. though as ‘Spirit Of The Light’ is one of those big production songs I felt was missing on her debut and here it is. The keys intro and her vocals work really well, before the song kicks in fully. ‘I Am Mining’ is like a long lost 80′s Heart song and is a great tune.

Martina Edoff is rightly on the up, as she tours with Epica later this year in the US and this album is a such a big leap up from her debut. Grab a listen, you won’t be disappointed. ****

TAD MOROSE – St. Demonius
Despotz Records

Tad Morose have been around since the early 1990′s playing a mix of straight ahead metal and power metal. This is second album since the band by the band to feature former Steel Attack vocalist Ronny Hemlin, who does like to drop the odd screamo vocal in now and then.

Tad Morose have riffs that chug along like a steam train, pummeling the listener into submission on songs like ‘Remain’ and ‘Where Ignorance Rains’. It can get a little familiar after a couple of spins although luckily ‘Forlorn’ and ‘Bow To The Reaper’s Blade’ have some added synths that add some variety. Both of these songs are album highlights and well worth a listen.

A band I had heard of but not heard anything by until now and this album is an enjoyable trad metal romp. ***1/2
