Quick plays: GEORGIA SOUND, BOB BRADSHAW

GEORGIA SOUND - Love Can Change

GEORGIA SOUND Love Can Change
[Release date 20.02.15]

If you like a decent soft rock singer/songwriter tune, look no further than self-released indie folk / pop debut from Georgia Sound – Ryan Roy and Shannon Magee, a duo from Calgary, Canada.

While they normally perform with just a keyboard, an acoustic guitar, and two mics, the album was recorded in Calgary with the help of Kent Macrae (drums), Chris Byrne (bass), Neil Gunhold (guitars) and former LA-based producer Steve Dierkins.

And while there’s countless examples of the format, what makes Georgia Sound stand out from the crowd is the material – which is instantly accessible, and the gorgeous harmony vocals.  And while Roy takes the majority of the lead lines, it’s Magee’s subtle underpinning harmonies that gild the lily.

The supporting cast fill the sound out nicely with some neat guitar lines courtesy of Gunhold, and while it’s primarily a gentle, reflective set they demonstrate they’re well capable of ‘rocking out’ on the up tempo ‘End Of An Era’.

For those of us who’ve enjoyed the soft rock of GRTR! favourites Kay Lied, Georgia Sound are a welcome addition to the fold.  ***1/2

BOB BRADSHAW Whatever You Wanted
Fluke Records [Release date 13.11.15]

Not a very rock ‘n’ roll name, Bob Bradshaw.  It sounds like Bob should be a double glazing salesman from Rotherham.  But no, he was raised in Ireland and found his musical education in bar rooms, clubs and honky tonks across the US of A, graduating from Boston’s Berklee College of Music in 2009.

Personally, I’m unconvinced that ‘studying’ can produce a singer songwriter.  I prefer to believe they’re born or created by life’s curved balls.

But Bob’s spent twenty five years exploring, writing and recording the music in the United States, and Whatever You Wanted – his 6th album – is an earnest, evocative exploration of roots-rock, western swing, country soul, and acoustic ballads.

There’s some subtle Celtic rhythms thrown into the mix, but for the most part it’s a curiously downbeat blend of Marc Cohn meets Elvis Costello.  And while it’s never less than ‘pleasant’, that’s damnation by faint praise.

Some have compared Bob to Randy Newman, and I can see the similarities.  But when Randy Newman comes on, I switch off.  And I’m afraid Whatever You Want is just too ponderous for my liking.  **
