News: R.I.P. DAVID BOWIE

R.I.P. DAVID BOWIE 1947-2016

David Bowie

David Bowie has died at the age of 69 from cancer.

His son, film director Duncan Jones, confirmed the news and a statement was issued on his social media accounts:

David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18-month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”

His new album, ‘Blackstar’, was released on January 8th, his birthday.

GRTR!’s Pete Whalley writes: “With the release of ‘The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars’ in 1972, David Bowie changed the concept of rock ‘stars’ forever.  It was about to become OK to wear make-up, dye your hair, wear flimsy clothes and record songs with titles like ‘Queen Bitch’.

A short promotional tour reached Liverpool on 4th September.  I was just 16 and it was my first ‘real’ gig – at The Top Rank Suite – a small, sold out, hot and sweaty, city centre club.

At 10 o’clock, as the lights went down and the Clockwork Orange soundtrack blared, a spike haired, made-up creature in a lurex jump-suit emerged into the spotlight as the Spiders kicked in at full volume. It was electric – like nothing I’d seen or heard before, and sealed a lifelong love affair with rock ‘n’ roll.

His passing marks a major milestone in the ever diminishing width of rock’s rich circle.”
