Album review: EPIC – Like A Phoenix
Escape Music www.escape-music.com [Release date 22.04.16]
Never judge a book (or in this case CD) by its cover, as the band’s name Epic and cover artwork on this album may have you expecting a power or melodic metal album. It is in fact a female fronted melodic rock band whose line-up consists of Tanya Rizkala (vocals), Mario Agostine (guitars), Souheil “Sous” Moukaddem (drums) and Mike Ganime (bass). From what I can find out this is the band’s debut album and if you like Heart, you will like this one.
Opener ‘All I Need’ is the heaviest song on the album, complete with a Tony Franklin approved bass solo, and does have you thinking the rest of the album will be melodic metal. The next song ‘Love Will Find A Way’ still has some guitar punch, however the vocals and melody recall Heart in their mid/late 80′s pomp. Mind you if that recalls Heart, the slower pace of ‘I Can Take You’ is uncannily like Heart.
Melodic rock fans will be in a spin over the glorious harmonies on ‘Save A Little Love’ and the outro singing, wow. Quick mention to guitarist Mario Agostine who adds little solos here and there, never over egging the musical mix. This song is a good example of that.
Epic should be on the shopping lists of Heart fans and those who enjoyed the 80′s rock of Witness. Mind you this is no 80′s throwback album, more the fact vocalist Tanya Rizkala sounds like Heart’s Ann Wilson and a little like Cher too. Epic have a fine and powerful female singer, coupled with memorable songs and have produced a winner. ****
