Hot on the heels of last year’s rather good ‘Mono’ EP The Standard Lamps are back with new album. They have also been busy on the live front supporting The Bluetones at the end of last year. ‘The Model World’ from that EP makes this album and is one of the stand out songs with its strong melody recalling the late 70′s power pop of The Knack.
The band are good at taking everyday issues and stories as the basis of their lyrics, then wrapping them in glorious melodies. ‘Dim And Dismal’ is a prime example of this, taking the humdrum of everyday life and have such an upbeat melody you can’t help but smile – a lot like The Supernaturals and Squeeze in this respect.
Made for radio ‘Carry On Dreaming’ comes across as Oasis meets The Jam, whilst these boys do like a proper rock ‘n’ roll work out as can be heard on ‘Living With Mum And Dad’, along with the album closer ‘You Don’t Listen To Your Records Anymore’. For a three piece they create an expansive sound, stretching themselves on the epic (well it is nearly six minutes double the length of a third of the songs on this album!) ’12:15′.
Great fun listening to this album and The Standard Lamps carry on the musical craft of such greats as Squeeze, The Bluetones and The Jam. Whilst they may never sadly reach the levels of success of the aforementioned trio, they know their way around a decent tune. ****
