Drummer Bun E. Carlos is still a member of Cheap Trick, although he doesn’t record or tour with them following a recent legal case. A real shame when bands have these disputes but then that is all part of the world of rock ‘n’ roll.
On this album Bun E. Carlos has gathered together musicians he has worked with in other bands like Candy Golde and the Monday Night Band, to produce a set of cover versions that encompass well known bands and the relatively obscure. That steady, dependable Bun E. Carlos beat drives along all the songs and drum solo friendly songs were selected.
Highlights include the summery pop of ‘Him Or Me’ (originally by Paul Revere and the Raiders), which features Taylor Hanson on vocals – yes that one of ‘Mmm Bop’ fame with his brothers. Loving the Bee Gees’ cover ‘Idea’, which is a fast pop rocker and very Cheap Trick sounding. Soul Asylum’s Dave Pirner sings the Bob Dylan cover ‘It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry’, which reminds me of Widespread Panic in the vocals and overall vibe of the performance.
A very refreshing covers album as even the big artists like the Who (‘Armenia City In The Sky’), don’t have over played songs being covered. Good fun as covers albums should be and likely to be played a lot in future years. ****
