Album review: LARKIN POE – Reskinned

LARKIN POE - Reskinned

RH Music [Release date 08.07.16]

We rather liked Larkin Poe’s last release – Kin (2014), a move by sisters Rebecca and Megan Poe towards a more pop/mainstream orientated style, albeit laced with their blues, rock and folk/country influences.

Two years down the line, Reskinned is a curious release – largely a reworking of Kin, with even the cover artwork, faded to monochrome, retained.

Out go five tracks, with five more introduced.  Given the sisters’ propensity in their early years for EP releases, you wonder why not simply release a new five track EP?  Because are punters really going to want to fork out for another slice of the same pie, albeit with a different relish?

Of the tracks that remain, there are new mixes, but frankly unless you were a diehard fan you’d be hard pushed to spot the difference or express any particular preference.  So really, the selling point here is the new material on which the girls have plugged in distortion pedals and cranked up their amps.

It’s another subtle change of direction – ‘Sucker Punch’ (the pick of the bunch), ‘Trouble In Mind’, and ‘Problem’ are fairly anodyne pop rockers that wouldn’t be out of place in a P!nk set, largely leaving the girls’ folk/country roots behind.  The amount of distortion on the vocals on ‘Problem’, frankly ruins an otherwise promising number.

Thankfully, the bluesy ‘When God Closes A Door’ and gospel tinged ‘Blunt’ dig deeper and are welcome additions to the Larkin Poe catalogue.  In isolation Reskinned is perhaps deserving of a **** rating, although I’m not entirely convinced by the girls new pop/rock direction, but if you’ve already got Kin you may want to think twice before reinvesting.  ***
