Eagle Rock [Release date 02.09.16]
Another live Styx DVD and this one was recorded on the band’s 2014 US tour with Def Leppard. Slightly different style this time around as the main featured concert has interviews with the band and road crew between songs (you can play the whole concert uninterrupted as one of the bonus features). The interviews are a fascinating insight into the band’s life on the road from Lawrence Gowan’s focus on health and fitness (he ropes in Def Leppard’s Phil Collen in on one piece to illustrate healthy rockstars), through to James Young’s worldly wise statements on life on the road. The bonus features include the thoughts of the band on touring with Def Leppard and a little more behind the scenes looking at their home lives.
The actual concert shows how polished and enjoyable the band are and they have the audience on their side from the off. The set list doesn’t vary from their live staples including ‘Foolin’ Yourself, a rocking ‘Blue Collar Man’ and ‘Superstars’, where the band get to show off their fabulous harmony vocals. Original bassist John Panozzo makes a guest appearance – always good to see him on stage with the band.
This live DVD is more for the hard core fans as it is more about the band and their road crew, less a straight forward live concert DVD. Hopefully the band’s next release will be the new studio album they are currently working on and here’s hoping for a UK appearance next year as they are long overdue back here. ****
