Night Ranger celebrate 35 years together with this double live CD and DVD set, recorded back in May this year at the House Of Blues in Chicago. Having been lucky enough to have seen them live twice now, you can guarantee Night Ranger will put on a top draw live show. This set list includes a lot of the band’s older songs like ‘Night Ranger’ and the excellent ‘Secret Of My Success’, which I’d love them to play next time they play the UK.
They may be veterans of the live circuit, yet the enthusiasm and sheer joy they put into each song can be clearly seen. Brad Gillis solos like his life depends on it on ‘(You Can Still) Rock In America’, whilst Kelly Keagy gives an impassioned vocal on the band’s big hit ‘Sister Christian’. Jack Blades acts at the main focus with the audience and of course sings the majority of the songs. New-ish guitarist Keri Kelli (with his glam look he is slightly out of kilter with the rest of he band) is the perfect foil for Gillis, with Eric Levy adding in the keyboards and piano parts. So good to hear a live keys player as opposed to backing tapes.
The DVD doesn’t hold any extras sadly, bar ‘Seven Wishes’ added as a bonus song. The outro does have a brief bit of chat with the band after the show and would have been good to add maybe a history of the band as an extra.
Perfect for fans and lovers of melodic hard rock from one of the best live bands around in any musical genre. ****1/2
