Quick plays: WILL LUDFORD, DAUDI MATSIKO, HANNAH ALDRIDGE

WILL LUDFORD Addicted

WILL LUDFORD Addicted
Big Buzzard Songs

Blues guitarist Will Ludford has worked in the past with Joe Meek, met George Harrison and jammed with Jimi Hendrix – not a bad musical CV! ‘Addicted’ has a distinctive 60′s feel to the music, be it the organ fills on many of the songs or the Kinks feel to ‘You Blew Me Out Of My Mind’.

Will Ludford’s playing comes from the classic style of blues playing, plenty of feel and slow solos when required. Song wise the subject matter can be a little typical blues based, such as ‘Standing At The Station’, however the guitar playing smooth’s over this. ‘Someone To Love’ and ‘Torpedo To Your Heart’ are the pick of the album for me, the latter listen out for some blistering guitar work.

Give him a try, especially if you enjoy the late 60′s blues rock/pop sound. ***

DAUDI MATSIKO An Introduction To Failure

DAUDI MATSIKO An Introduction To Failure
Naim Records [Release date 26.05.17]

This album  is a reissue of Daudi Matsiko’s first two, self-released EPs, ’The Lingering Effects Of Disconnection’ (2015) and ‘A Brief Introduction To Failure’ (2014). These eight tracks have been combined for his first release on Naim Records. He has worked with electronic acts and toured with many including the wonderfully named GoGo Penguin!

These are incredibly personal songs like ‘You Can Do Better Than Me, But I Hope You Don’t', and each song brings out his atmospheric vocals and fluid acoustic guitar playing. The sound/production is spot on with the mixing of Adam Scrimshire allowing the listener to hear and feel the strings being played. Interesting mix in the music with a little jazz on ‘Sandwiches’, whilst ‘This Day’ has a uplifting feel and rising tempo to a satisfying acoustic crescendo.

Daudi Matsiko’s singing is sublime and requires your full attention when listening, as all good music should. A good introduction and round-up of his music to date.  ***1/2

HANNAH ALDRIDGE Gold Rush Rootsy Music [Release date 16.06.17]

Hannah Aldridge – daughter of esteemed Muscle Shoals/ Nashville songwriter and producer Walt Aldridge – is back with her second album after her debut album, 2014′s ’Razor Wire’ picked up rave reviews, including one here on GRTR!

Hannah Aldridge successfully mixes country/Americana as can be heard on ‘Burning Down Birmingham’, complete with a gospel chorus. The Black Crowes also spring to mind on this on with the slow guitar solos. ‘No Heart Left Behind’ reminds you of Tom Petty on the chorus – a really catchy number. ‘Lace’ really draws you in with a storytelling vocal and sublime guitar playing – impressive stuff.

In fact the whole album is a joy from start to finish and two albums in Hannah Aldridge is set to establish herself as a ‘must listen’.

Safe to say if you enjoyed her debut album ‘Gold Rush’ will please you, as she continues her beguiling mix of country and southern rock, topped off by her powerful singing. ****
