Album review: ORDEN OGAN – Gunmen

ORDEN OGAN - Gunmen

AFM Records [Release date 07.07.17]

Orden Ogan are back with their new studio album ‘Gunmen’ which follows hot on the heels of last year’s ‘The Book of Ogan’ compilation. They have already released a well received western themed video on YouTube for the title track and the band are no stranger to live shows playing all over Europe, with a tour this autumn with fellow label mates Rhapsody Of Fire.

‘Gunmen’ is classic Orden Ogan, containing a big chorus featuring the band’s trademark choral backing vocals and some serious riffing. There is a little bit of a western theme in parts of the album with ‘Vampire In A Ghost Town’ (the one song on the album I can’t really get into yet) and ‘Down Here (Wanted: Dead Or Alive)’ – that song packs a mean punch in the drums and guitars department.

Metal bands need a powerful and emotive vocalist to really stand out and luckily Orden Ogan have Sebastian “Seeb” Levermann who fair belts out the songs on here. Even the quiet start to ‘The Other Side’, a song that features Liv Kristine (ex-Leave’s Eyes), soon sees Sebastian “Seeb” Levermann soaring in with his vocals. Both work well together and Liv Kristine was an inspired choice for this duet.

Those fans who enjoy the band’s more epic side will love ‘Finis Coronat Opus’. Check out the choral harmonies at around the six minute mark, wow! Shows that a good metal band can try various musical ideas and not get stuck in a musical rut.

They have gone back to add more of the epic feel to their music that was perhaps missing on their last album ‘Ravenhead’, making ‘Gunmen’ one that will please old and new fans alike. Orden Ogan march on!  ****
