BMG [Release date 01.09.17]
“OK class, hands up who’s familiar with the works of Chris Jagger?” “Michael Eavis put your hand down, and take 100 lines: ‘I will put more rock acts on at Glasto”’.
Yes, Chris Jagger ‘ Mick’s younger sibling – has had a wide and varied career as an actor, broadcaster, journalist, guitar maker, designer, and naturally enough, musician.
More attuned to Cajun, folk, and infused rock ‘n’ blues than his big brother, the ‘family’ connection has nevertheless opened doors firmly shut to others and as a result his fairly little known back catalogue has featured cameos from luminaries such as David Gilmour, Dave Stewart, Leo Sayer, Sam Brown, and, of course … Sir Mick.
This sixteen track retrospective marks Jagger’s appearance at this year’s Glastonbury and opens with a gentle sub-Stones R&B boogie with some neat slide guitar and fiddle. Uncomplicated stuff, and a ‘feel good’ factor that perhaps lends itself more to a live environment than listening from the comfort of your favourite La-Z-Boy recliner.
Highlights are Sam Brown’s appearance on ‘Got Me’ (a reminder, if ever one were needed, of just what a great vocalist she is/was), and Gilmour’s ethereal guitar work on ‘Junkman’, but taken in the round, All The Best is most likely to appeal to those who enjoy retro-era material like that pedalled by Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra.
One new track features – ‘Avalon Girls’ – marking Jagger’s appearance on Glasto’s Avalon stage this year. It sounds like Chas and Dave play Roxy Music. Enuff said. ***
