Album review: SUZI QUATRO – Legend
Chrysalis [Release date 22.09.17]
To coincide with Suzi’s third, fourth, fifth and sixth albums (1975 – 1979 on RAK) being fully remastered and issued digitally for the first time, Chrysalis issue this compilation that covers a good chunk of her career as well as could be expected on a single disc. It really needs quite a bit more.
The new releases of Your Mamma Won’t Like Me (1975), Aggro-Phobia (1976), If You Knew Suzi (1978) and Suzi And Other Four Letter Words (1979) are all revamped and are an essential part of any Quatro Collection.
You all know the early hits from the first two albums (’48 Crash, Can The Can, Devil Gate Drive et al), which are all here in their glory, there’s plenty of proof that the later albums rock just as good, the melodies just as catchy. Just check out “She’s In Love With You”, a track I’ve not gotten out of my head since I saw it performed on Top Of The Pops when I was 8 years old. And that’s a LONG time.
Quatro is an American singer, songwriter, bassist and actress who made her name in the 60s playing with the Art Quatro Trio and The Pleasure Seekers, but it is the relationship she struck with RAK and producer Mickie Most in the early 70s and the subsequent move to the UK that she found fame, initially as part of the Glam Rock scene.
And while many songs were (co) self penned, there was also the song writing partnership struck up with RAK’s Chinn and Chapman duo. Her career, spanning fifteen solo studio albums, has also embraced acting, notably Happy Days (Leather Tuscadero), and a personal memorable role in Midsomer Murders next to (killed off by) James Cosmo.
The album here kicks off with Can The Can, and as catchy and wonderful as these 1973/74 tracks are, check out that piano on Devil Gate Drive, there is a nod to the bubblegum pop that influenced much of the glam movement. The later work is a little more serious yet just as good. Stumblin’ In (also here) was a hit duet with Smokie’s Chris Norman.
A couple of tracks bring us right up to date coming from 2006’s Back To The Drive, with 15 Minutes Of Fame co-written by Sweet guitarist Andy Scott. Some great guitar, rich keyboards and a vibe that still rocks and thrills.
A great intro, as good as a single disc will take you across a catalogue that one disc can’t really do justice to.
Suzi is indeed a four letter word. And so is rock. ****
