Album review: TARGET – In Target
Escape Music [Release date 20.10.07]
Target will be of interest to melodic rock fans as the band featured future Cobra/Survivor vocalist Jimi Jamison, who sadly died back in 2014. This was planned to be Target’s third album and was recorded in 1979 with the aforementioned Jamison joined by Tommy Cathey (bass/vocals), guitarists Paul Cannon and Buddy Davis, plus drummer Bill Marshall.
It is an album very much of its time, being in the main 70′s US/Canadian hard rock similar to bands like Triumph and even Boston on the hard rocking ‘Taxman’, easily the stand out song on the album.
Some songs don’t stand up so well over the years like ‘Love Magician’, although the sax solo by Gary Topper adds a bit of variety to the song. Bit of southern rock in the guitar playing ‘A Place Called Hot’, another strong song with a rocking guitar solo. One bonus song on this release, a demo ‘Echo Tango’.
The band called it a day in 1979, although look on YouTube and you can see footage of the band’s ten year reunion featuring Jimi Jamison in fine vocal form.
With sleeve notes by the highly knowledgeable Dave Reynolds, it is good to see this early piece of Jimi Jamison’s career get a proper release. Even at the start of his musical career Jimi Jamison had a strong and distinctive vocal and this album sits nicely just before the start of his Survivor days. ***1/2
