Album review: JAIMZ VOKINS – Time Machine

AOR Blvd [Release date 06.10.17]

Jaimz Vokins is the new project from former Tigertailz vocalist Steevi Jaimz and guitarist Phil Vokins, who is probably best known for his time in Wrathchild. Teaming up with producer Dave Draper (The Wildhearts/The Professionals) the pair have recorded “Time Machine”, more than just a bog standard album of cover versions this is a collection of ten songs that have been reinterpreted in an original and fitting way.

The choice of tracks is varied and not always what you would expect, with the likes of The Ruts’ “Babylon’s Burning” sitting comfortably alongside Tom Petty’s “The Wild One, Forever” and Cher’s “Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves”, the latter featuring The Runaways’ Cherie Currie.

Other highlights on the album include Slade’s “Look At Last Nite”, David Essex’s “Stardust” and Steve Jones’ “God In Louisiana”- the latter may be a somewhat unusual choice but works very well here. The surprise song up the sleeve is an updated version of the Tigertailz song “Living Without You”- sounding great it acts as a bonus track on the album.

With both Vokins and Jaimz on top form, the pair compliment each other throughout the album. Hopefully this is the start of an ongoing partnership as I’d love to hear a full album of original material from the pair. ****
