Album review: KIM WILDE – Here Come The Aliens

This is Kim Wilde’s first full UK album release since 1992 and 2018 also sees her first full UK tour in nearly thirty years. She also had a pop at the Christmas number 1 battle with an anti-Christmas song recorded with Lawnmower Deth.

The album title stems from Kim Wilde’s near close encounter in her back garden in 2009, which has certainly helped create some buzz in the media over the album.

It is a family affair as her brother Ricky is co-writer on the songs and play guitar on the album, whilst her niece Scarlett also lends a hand in the song writing, as well designing the eye catching album cover artwork.

Opener ’1969′ is a glorious OTT piece of synth pop and listen out for a bit of Pac Man in the mix. Kim duets with Ricky on ‘Pop Don’t Stop’ – the opening bars sound a little like the Buggles! It is a song that once the chorus gets into your head you end up humming and singing it for days on end. Put this in as our Eurovision entry and we’d be in top half of the leader board that’s for sure.

Nod to the modern day with ‘Kandy Krush’ which despite its dance beats features smoking guitar playing by Ricky Wilde. Synth pop overload on ‘Stereo Shot’, a song that really hits the pop spot. ‘Yours Til’ The End’ has the potential to be a hit with modern vocal effects. Nice bit of groovy bass playing on this song.

‘Solstice’ is a moving ballad and at odds with the rest of the bouncy pop rock of the rest of the album. Kim’s vocals sound sublime on this one over a piano and symphonic backdrop. Shades of Ultravox and the Cult on ‘Rock The Paradiso’, again featuring plenty of synths and biting guitar riffs.

Kim’s dad Marty Wilde still performs and tours proving that she has plenty of music and live shows in her yet. An enjoyable and delightful blast of pop/rock music from start to finish. ****
