ReprinT [Release date 04.05.18]
Originally slated for release 12 months ago, and with the lead single ‘Never Stop Believing’ released as long ago as February 2016, Portsmouth singer songwriter Simon Kent’s follow up to his 2014 sophomore album Dreams And Memories has been a while coming.
We’re not offered any explanation for the delay, but in the interim he’s been touring with 80′s stalwarts like Echo & The Bunnymen, Toyah, China Crisis, and The Christians, and the good news is that In Another World, in its melody-driven, electronic pop offers something a little different to acoustic guitar toting ranks [over] populating the genre.
With influences in the keyboard electronica of the likes of Depeche Mode, Bowie, Roxy and Japan, In Another Life has more in common with the pop pedalled by the likes of Tears For Fears. Little wonder, therefore, that ‘Never Stop Believing’ found popularity on Janice long’s Radio 2 show and beyond, including Stateside.
Highly melodic, and easy on the ear with some lovely vocals, In Another Life is a remarkably consistent offering. If there’s a criticism, it’s that it’s all a bit ‘comfortable’, and while you’re probably never going to need to hit the ‘next’ button, I’m not wholly convinced it’s an album you’d want to regularly reach for. ***
