Fresh from opening for Pendragon, and featuring as one of the backing vocalists on their 2016 Masquerade Overture 20th anniversary, and 2017 European tours, Cheltenham- based singer songwriter Verity White looks to establish a solo career with her first long player.
With a wide range of influences – 90s rock bands and grunge, to classic soul, industrial and metal, through to folk and electronica – White is one of a new generation of female singers led by the likes of Mollie Marriott and Lisa Ronson.
Something of a family affair, with hubbie Alex not only writing the music and producing, but playing guitar, synths, bass and drums (and with Dad also getting in on the act laying down bass on one track), and preceded by two EPs (Parentheses and Stripped Bare (and a double A-side single (‘Too Much’/'Look Inside’), Breaking Out was actually released towards the end of 2017, but seems to be getting a fresh push.
It’s a difficult record to pigeon hole, but what you get is retro, radio-friendly rock album with a soulful edge that wouldn’t be out of place sitting next to an album like Billie Myers mid-90′s debut.
A relatively ‘soft rock’ release, comparisons abound both old (vocally, with Pat Benatar, in particular) and new, with the use of synths adding a vintage edge to numbers like ‘Demons In Your Head’ and ‘Exhale’.
White puts in a more than convincing vocal performance throughout, with just the right amount of ‘edge’, although the chunky guitar work and synths that permeate the album tend to be a little monochrome and inorganic which, along with the absence of a ‘killer’ track, makes Breaking Out a [very] good, rather than a great debut album.
But there’s the makings here of a top notch artist, and you can be sure Verity White is a name we’ll be hearing more of. ***1/2
