Quick plays: STARBREAKER, WEST BOUND

STARBREAKER Dysphoria

STARBREAKER Dysphoria Frontiers [Release date 25.01.19]

Third album from the Starbreaker project featuring Primal Fear guitarist Magnus Karlsson and former TNT vocalist Tony Harnell. It has been awhile as their second album was released back in 2008.

With Tony Harnell’s distinctive high octave singing it will come as no surprise that there is a TNT sound to songs like ‘Last December’. Starbreaker are more metal though as opener ‘Pure Evil’ shows.

The Journey sound on the ballad ‘Beautiful One’ further shows off Harnell’s vocals, complete with a tasty guitar outro from Magnum Karlsson. They even cover the Judas Priest song that gives the band its name, where Karlsson gets a chance to show his guitar skills.

If you enjoyed the previous Starbreaker albums and the singing of Tony Harnell, then this is a must have. ***1/2

 WEST BOUND Volume 1

WEST BOUND Volume 1 Frontiers [Release date 22.02.19]

West Bound is vocalist Chas West (Resurrection Kings, Bonham, Lynch Mob), guitarist & producer Roy Z (Bruce Dickinson, Halford, Tribe of Gypsies), guitarist Jimmy Burkard, bassist Jason Cornwell and drummer Dave Moreno with Stephen LeBlanc on keyboards.

It will come as no surprise, given that Chas West was in the latter days of Bonham and still fronts a Led Zeppelin tribute band, that the album has a strong Led Zep influence in the vocals, drums and arrangements. Heck ‘Dance Of Life’ sounds like a Led Zep outtake! Whilst the spirit of ‘Kashmir’ lurks on the album’s closer ‘Traveller’.

Bit of Moody/Marsden era Whitesnake going on with ‘Keeper of the Flame’, whilst the ballad ‘Turn To You’ is one of the album’s stand outs.

One surprising thing given Roy Z’s involvement is the sound, which is muddy and the drums lack that bottom end heft which the songs deserve.

Bonham and Whitesnake did it better and sadly this is a disappointing release overall, bar a few songs worthy of adding to your music collection. ***
