Album review: 99 CRIMES – 99 Crimes
Perris Records [Release date 05.04.19]
99 Crimes are the band featuring Paul Lidel (Dangerous Toys, Dirty Looks, Broken Teeth) on guitar and vocals, drummer Chris Jordan and a bass player called Jeff Lynne (not that Jeff Lynne or things would have turned out a whole lot different).
Their new self-titled debut opens with “Devil In Your Dreams”, on listening to this I wrote down “Raw and soaked in adrenaline, I swear to god, if you threw a match at this album it would literally explode”. I may have been a bit premature there. Although this is a good album and has an overall ‘70’s/’80’s feel to it, without sounding dated, it has two sides to it- those tracks which are more in the Broken Teeth zone, and those that are a bit more Uriah Heap like.
Fans of Lidel’s other bands will no doubt head straight to tracks like “Fool”, “Do It Over ”, “Never Say Never” and “Devil In Your Dreams”, these along with “Blood From A Stone” making up the albums highlights. The album’s first single “Rumor” is a fairly easy to listen to, and .38 Special sounding, effort. Unfortunately, my earlier enthusiasm was slightly on the wane after these tracks, which is a shame as there is so much potential there.
99 Crimes is by no means a bad album but I would like to see where the band go direction wise with their second album. ***
