Eagle Vision [Release date 27.09.19]

Recorded live at London’s Hammersmith Odeon (yes, technically it’s not called that anymore but I’m still stuck firmly in the past) earlier this year, this newly released double CD and DVD package serves to show what a great band Slash, Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators are. Bearing in mind that this was originally put together as Slash’s main project before the highly successful Guns n Roses reunion, the band has continued to release albums and play live whilst the latter’s “Not In This Lifetime” tour heads seemingly never-ending around the globe.

Following the release of recent album “Living The Dream”, this two hour live set includes tracks from each of Slash’s four solo albums. During opening track “The Call Of The Wild” I find myself imaging Axl Rose tearing his way through this, “Halo” and “My Antidote” have a heavier feel, the former with an intro reminiscent of early Metallica. “Driving Rain” is a great song that unfortunately feels a little lukewarm here, and although I still prefer the Ian Astbury version, “Ghost” still sounds great live.

There are three songs in the set that have been extended for the live show “World On Fire” clocks in at seventeen minutes, show closer “Anastasia” nine minutes and “Wicked Stone” is an eleven-minute instrumental workout and these once again highlight the high calibre of the musicianship within the group. “Standing In The Sun” and “Back From Cali” are two of the best songs in the set whilst bassist Todd Kerns fronts the band for runs through “We’re All Gonna Die” and a cover of Motorhead’s “Doctor Alibi”. However, the biggest cheers from the crowd on the night come for “Nightrain” and from there on out the energy is up and away we go until the curtain drops, those last handful of songs including “Starlight” and “You’re A Lie”.

Extras on the DVD include a behind the scenes feature and interviews with Slash and Myles Kennedy.

With the Guns N Roses rumour mill currently doing overtime regarding new material, and the “Not In This Lifetime” tour starting yet another leg, could this be the last hurrah for Slash, Myles Kennedy and The Conspirators? I doubt it when you consider what a great live band they are, and how popular they continue to be. ****
