Second album from League Of Lights, who are the husband and wife duo Farrah and Richard West – the latter best known for being a member of Threshold. Their self-titled debut album released back in 2011, featuring guest musicians from the likes of Within Temptation and Fates Warning. On this album they wrote and recorded all the music themselves – Farrah on vocals and Richard providing the music.
Opener ‘Shockwave’ sounds like a Threshold song, however it being the heaviest song on the album don’t go expecting an album of Threshold sounding tunes. Instead, League Of Lights explore many facets of the wonderful world of pop, be it synth pop (‘Spectrometer’ – the synths are a must hear on this one), piano led ballads (‘Scarlet Thread’) or electronic dance music (EDM) on ‘Due Diligence’.
Farrah’s vocals are easy on the ear, yet never overwhelmed by the predominantly led keys/synths music. Fans of synths/keyboards will find much to enjoy in the playing on this album.
The single ‘On A Night Like This’, with its upbeat tempo and lyric, is perfect for daytime radio. Featuring an instant chorus, the melodious vocals of Farrah and the keyboards wizardry of Richard, they have a crossover hit on their hands.
League Of Lights have certainly found their own sound on ‘In The In Between’, deftly mixing synth pop, EDM, rock and progressive elements to create an enjoyable and intriguing listen from start to finish. ****
