EP review: THE LICKERISH QUARTET – Threesome Vol. 1

THE LICKERISH QUARTET - Threesome Vol. 1

Lickerish Quartet/Label Logic [Release date 15.05.20]

The Lickerish Quartet formed in 2017, featuring former Jellyfish members Roger Manning Jnr. (Imperial Drag), Eric Dover (Slash’s Snakepit, Alice Cooper, Imperial Drag) and Tim Smith. All three of them toured in support of Jellyfish’s second album ‘Spilt Milk’ (Manning and Smith featured on the album too). Jeremy Stacey (King Crimson) plays drums on this EP.

The Lickerish Quartet plan to release three EPs by September of this year, a real shot of good news for fans of power pop and the much missed Jellyfish.

Kicking off with ‘Fadoodle’, a piece of ear candy if ever there was one, recalling such greats as Cheap Trick, Sparks, Roxy Music, ELO and of course Jellyfish. The cheeky lyric, spoken word parts and harmonies make this one of the songs of the year to date.

‘Bluebird’s Blues’ is a gentle number, whilst ‘There Is A Magic Number’ has a 70’s soft rock/FM radio vibe with a precise guitar solo over synths and blissful backing vocals.

‘Lighthouse Spaceship’ is a prog affair, with a tip of the hat to ELO again and 70s pomp rock in the synths and guitars – wonderful stuff. They throw the kitchen sink and all other musical utensils into this one.

You only feel short changed in that this is an EP but by September, all being well we’ll have a full album’s worth of songs once all three EPs are out. Until then we can enjoy these four gems of pop rock genius. They have certainly set the bar high for the next couple of EPs. ****
