Album review: THE WALK-A-BOUT – 20/20
Shred The Evidence Records [Release date 05.06.20]
New York Long Islanders (East End) The Walk-A-Bout developed around the songwriting skills of Australian Darren ‘Sully’ Sullivan (vocals) and Kevin Anderson (guitars) and their debut mini-album ‘Things Are Looking Up’ came out in the summer of 2018.
The new album should appeal to those who like the underpinning funk of, say, Little Feat (‘Date Nut Porridge’) but on songs like ‘Timeless’ and ‘Get Me To The Station’ they also channel their inner early Santana. Elsewhere there are echoes of Little River Band.
The playing is competent throughout although I am not convinced by “Sully”‘s vocals, perhaps an acquired taste stretched over a whole album. On ‘Dark Roads’ for example he reminds me a little of The Tangent’s Andy Tillison whose own delivery is always tempered by the perceptive/humourous lyrical content.
Maybe they should have drafted in more prominently Victoria Faiella who lends her backing vocals to the opener ‘Victory Parade’ or even guitarist Dave Christian who fronts his own composition the excellent ‘Hero’.
20/20 covers a fair amount of stylistic bases whilst never really touching on a consistent musical formula and this could be its weakness for the more committed listener. There’s a lot to like, though . ***1/2
