EP review: THE LICKERISH QUARTET – Threesome Vol. 2

THE LICKERISH QUARTET – Threesome Vol. 2

Stranger Danger [Release date 15.01.21]

The Lickerish Quartet return with their second four song EP. The band comprise ex-Jellyfish members Roger Joseph Manning Jr, Tim Smith and Eric Dover and like the much missed Jellyfish, they carry on that band’s love of quirky pop rock.

Tim Smith says the EP “finds our threesome in fine form, with four new songs to get you through Covid times and beyond!”

‘Snollygooster Goon’ had been released as a single ahead of the EP’s release. You got to love the band’s song titles! A neat piece of pop rock eclipsed for me by ‘The Dream That Took Me Over’, a song that recalls ELO’s late 70’s disco sound. To be fair there is not one duff song on the EP.

‘Do You Feel Better?’ is a joyful tune, driven along by piano and a simple, yet precise drumbeat. Add in harmony vocals, a few handclaps and you’re onto a winner. ‘Sovereignty Blues’ highlights how successful the Lickerish Quartet are at mixing familiar sounds – in this case late 60′s pop with a tip of the hat to the Beach Boys – adding in their own pop magic. Marvellous.

Sweet pop rock melodies on the outside with sharp, tangy lyrics contained within. A perfect pick me up for the start of the year and beyond. ****
