Album review: TOBY JEPSON – Viewfinder
Jepsongs Recordings [Release date 12.03.21]
“This is a selection of my solo songs that I hope you enjoy for what they are; moments in time when I was on a journey that ultimately brought them into being.” So says former Little Angels and current Wayward Sons frontman Toby Jepson.
Comprising of 16 songs taken from various releases between 2002 to 2013, ‘Viewfinder’ also includes four previously unreleased bonus tracks – Little Bird, Overwhelming Me, Losing Side and Picking up the Pieces.
There are plenty of musical styles on this collection, including my personal favourite of his solo work, the punk pop ‘Unwind’. That one is a proper tune to bounce around to played loud! ‘Back In The Day’ has a grunge feel, whilst ‘When Will We Learn’ could have been a Little Angels ballad.
There is a lot to take in on this twenty song selection and it clearly shows how he moved away from the Little Angels sound, quite radically at times. Further highlights including the title track and the beautiful ballad ‘Just No Way’. Toby’s impassioned vocal performance sits perfectly on top of the piano and strings backing.
If you missed some (or all) of Toby Jepson’s solo outings between Little Angels finishing and Wayward Sons starting out (via Toby Jepson & the Whole Truth, Fastway & Gun!), ‘Viewfinder’ gives a fascinating insight to how his music and song writing have developed over the years. ***1/2
